CANON HISTORY: Here is the Wiki entry for Muhyo & Roji. It doesn't really give a good synopsis though, so I do have a written history for Roji here. I apologize for the length; with the canon being 18 volumes long and Roji being a titular character, there's a lot of ground to cover. I kept it as succinct as possible.
For more information on Roji's canon, I have a general info post written up here.
CANON PERSONALITY:
"This is true ability. A kind, unwavering heart."
Roji's kind and pure nature is the main piece of his personality, and it's often brought up by other characters throughout the story. Friendly and polite, Roji has no trouble making friends. Roji is always willing to help others, and often puts others' needs before his own. He has even saved those who have treated him poorly in the past. When someone is struggling or is in a bad place, Roji is willing to attempt to cheer them up or help in any way he can. It's surprisingly helpful for discerning that a seemingly bad ghost is actually more benign than it appears. When he is in danger, he would rather make sure that his friends are safe first. For example, when he was being possessed by a ghost at one point in the story, he requested that the ghost at least help Muhyo afterword if it truly was going to have its way with him. He is also fiercely loyal to his friends, especially Muhyo. It doesn't matter if power or wealth is involved. When Page Klaus tested his character and offered him a different job that would grant him more power and training than his current partnership with Muhyo could offer, Roji firmly refused, stating that he valued his partner more than he valued power. His pure heart and desire to help others is likely the source of his extremely high willpower.
That isn't to say that being kindhearted doesn't have its drawbacks. In fact, it actually has quite a few in the work environment of Magic Law. That's exactly why so many find Roji's ability to maintain it to be so commendable. Since he's always wanting to help others, Roji has a tendency to be more trusting than he really ought to be, to the point of him being gullible and easy to deceive at times. It's gotten him into dicey situations with ghosts who are more than eager to take advantage of his trust. Speaking of dicey situations, his tendency to put others before himself, while heroic and thoughtful, can also be seen as incredibly reckless and leads others to worry about him. His altruism is also what leads him to fail an important test near the end of the series.
Another major part of Roji's personality and something that is touched on many times throughout the story is his fluctuating confidence. He's prone to being pretty emotional in general, crying at ghost sob stories or when negative things in general happen. He's kind of a sap. Mission-wise, when things are going well, of course he's going to be very confident. However, straight after the event is over, he realizes that he was being overconfident and scolds himself for it. He has a very hard time giving himself a pat on the back every now and then, even when he succeeds at something. He always feels that he can do better. An example of this is when he used his "super fab tech" (he's good at coming up with little inventions) in order for his allies to defeat an extremely powerful enemy. Instead of being confident about it, he instead treated that idea as just an idea and not really helping.
He often compares himself to his colleagues of higher rank and skill, and beats himself up over not having as much knowledge as them and worrying that he could end up getting someone hurt with a misstep. His central goal throughout the series is to pull his own weight properly assist Muhyo, so when he is unable to help in a situation where his colleagues are, it's a serious blow to his confidence. At times, he's even gotten jealous over such events, which leads to Muhyo chewing him out pretty bad. However, with a little bit of reassuring, he is usually able to bounce back and focus on the task at hand. His biggest points of development happen when he is at his lowest and is able to figure out bits and pieces of why Muhyo chose him as his assistant. These are the moments where he is able to produce the most power, showing off his true ability and saving the day.
While much can be said about his shifting ability to believe in himself, the fact that Roji is even in this business despite having an intense fear of ghosts cannot go without being commented on. Make no mistake, it's definitely a weakness of his- it's one of the factors that can impede his performance. Even though he tries his best, he's not immune to freezing up in the presence of a particularly intimidating enemy. But it also showcases just how strong he can be at the same time, emotionally and mentally. Despite being terrified of ghosts, Roji will never back down to them, especially if others are in danger.
Another big component to Roji's personality is the fact that he's constantly learning. Roji is often seen marveling at various things in the story, be it new abilities of ghosts, or other elements within the world of Magic Law. While Roji has heavily studied ghosts and is very knowledgeable about them, that's...about it. Despite being the assistant of the genius Muhyo, Roji actually doesn't know all that much about Magic Law at the beginning of the story. He failed his first entrance exam to get into the Magic Law School, and he applied to be Muhyo's assistant because knowledge of Magic Law wasn't required. As expected, it wasn't his knowledge of Magic Law that earned him the position, but the display of his ability and deep desire to help others during a sudden ghost attack at the Magic Law Association.
Even near the end of the series, Roji still has a lot to learn about the world and the way things work, especially within the world of Magic Law. For example, in the world of Magic Law, practitioners are able to use different types of tools known as artifacts. Practitioners are encouraged to use different types of artifacts to figure out what suits them best. Even far into the series, Roji has only seen less than a dozen of them. It is shown in the story that a couple times where he attempts to use new artifacts backfire and someone gets hurt. However, when he is able to concentrate and when the going is tough, Roji is able to pull through and learn new and helpful spells to provide support.
SKILLS/ABILITIES:
Magical Abilities:
Extremely high spiritual power. In canon, practitioners of spiritual magic/Magic Law are born with a set amount of magical potential. Roji's ability is often stated as something of an anomaly: it's off the charts. He has so much spiritual power (often referred to as "tempering" which I will use from here on), it's constantly leaking out of him and attracting ghosts in the process. He was given a special tie to help patch up the leak.
Roji's unusually high tempering allows him to completely outperform others in his rank on the practitioner skill ladder. Since he has so much of it, he can last quite a while in a fight with ghosts and he is able to use magic and items that can usually only be used by well-seasoned practitioners. However, due to his lack of experience, much of his potential remains untapped, so most of his powerful moves come in a pinch and not necessarily on the regular. By the end of the series, he's still only a low-ranked practitioner. But he's learning!
Spiritual sense. Though any human can see spirits under the right conditions, practitioners are much better at sensing and spotting them along with the residue that they leave behind. Roji possesses this sense, but it's not nearly as developed as say, Muhyo's.
Use of magical artifacts. Artifacts are items used by Magic Law practitioners to aid them in encounters with aggressive spirits. Since Roji is at something of an apprentice level, the artifacts that he uses are meant to support his partner Muhyo. His primary artifact is the Pen of Wards, which is a common artifact used among low-ranked practitioners. It's a supportive/defensive tool for writing spells on wards to bind or damage spirits, as well as provide protective barriers. Since he has so much tempering, Roji can use multiple wards at a time, or more powerful wards than most apprentices are capable of.
Aroropathy. That's canon jargon, but essentially it's a symbiotic relationship on the spiritual level between humans that draws them together like a red string of fate. Roji has this with Muhyo. Part of Roji's overflowing tempering is transferred to Muhyo, making his magic extremely powerful. In turn, Roji's own ability is bettered by working with Muhyo. It's more of an unseen force, and the two of them aren't even aware of it.
General Skills:
Cooking. Canon makes it clear that Roji's a pretty talented cook. He does all the cooking for himself and Muhyo, and he's particularly skilled with making good meals on a very tight budget. He even got his own cookbook made recently...
Inventive. Roji's got a knack for little inventions that he calls "super fab tech". Picture them as props with little mechanisms inside of them. A lot of the time he'll re-purpose something for him and Muhyo to use as a disguise of sorts. Examples: here and here. They're obviously hit or miss, and usually pretty silly. However, Roji being able to think in an inventive mindset on the fly really helps out in some battles later on. In a particularly crucial battle, his quick calculations about methods to increase the power of an ally's spinning attack using the environment (a spiral staircase) wins the battle for the team.
General upkeep and management of a business. Though the business is officially the Muhyo Bureau of Supernatural Investigation, Roji is the one who effectively runs it. He takes care of all the paperwork, deals with potential clients before Muhyo meets them, makes sure the bills get paid, and keeps the office clean. It's safe to say he's taken at least a couple business management classes.

PHYSICAL DIFFERENCES: The only difference is Roji's hair color. Instead of a yellow-green, it's blonde in Recolle.
AU HISTORY:
✒ Born and grew up in Japan. He was an only child; his father is a salaryman and his mother works part-time at a book store. She was primarily a stay-at-home mom in Roji's early years though.
✒ Attended school in Japan, all the way through graduating high school. Roji was a pretty good student. He particularly excelled in math, science and home ec. He discovered his love for cooking in his home ec. classes, and began honing his skills around that time.
✒ During elementary school, he got his nickname "Roji". It's from swapping the kanji in his given name around (Jiro -> Roji), which he came up with with the help of a friend. He still uses that nickname, and is known by it more than his given name.
✒ He was able to make friends well enough, though he was definitely meek and was easily walked all over by his more pushy "friends". He occasionally got picked on due to this, but he tried not to let it affect him too much.
✒ As he grew older, he became much more outgoing and his social skills really blossomed as he put himself out there more. He became a good friend to rely on, always helping whenever possible. He never really grew out of his innocence though, and is still prone to being gullible and too nice to say no.
✒ In the years leading up to his graduation from high school, Roji had already set his sights on Recolle University, the science department having caught his eye.
✒ Finances were pretty tight in his family though, and he knew that he would have to try to save for his tuition on his own. He did his best to to earn some scholarships to help in addition to his part-time jobs, but didn't find much luck with it.
✒ However, his parents were able to help him and provide the resources for him to move to Recolle- a major step in the right direction. With his dream within reach, Roji prepared himself for his eventual independence. He would be oceans away from his parents if this all panned out- he needed to be able to fend for himself!
✒ Shortly after graduating from high school, Roji pooled the resources he had managed to save and from what his parents provided and made the move to Recolle. He had enough funds to get on his feet in the city. It was actually pretty harrowing in the first few months- no amount of preparation can truly prepare one for living completely on their own, after all.
✒ Once he was established with a place to live and a job (ironically, at Recolle U!) to pay the bills with, Roji began setting extra funds aside for his eventual enrollment in Recolle U.
✒ Two years have passed since his move to Recolle, and he's become much more acclimated to the culture. He's also gotten much better with his spoken English! He still works at the Recolle U cafeteria where he has since grown rather accustomed to the campus and even some of the clubs. He was invited to be an honorary member of Recolle U's anime club by Byakuya (
falsepretentious, with permission!).
✒ In recent months, he has begun sharing an apartment space with his new roommate Sakichi (
idealest, with permission!) after his previous roommate moved out to a different part of the city.
AU PERSONALITY:
For the most part, Roji's personality isn't that far off from his canon counterpart's. He's still kindhearted, friendly and caring of others. He still watches out for others and tries to help whenever he can, but not quite to the extreme self-sacrificial stunts that he pulled a few times in canon. And of course, he's still prone to being over-emotional and a bit of a crybaby...only over completely mundane things like sappy anime, not getting a desired character in a mobile game and panic over a late bill rather than ghostly situations and dire straits.
However, the absence of Magic Law and his spiritual ability has definitely caused a shift in his confidence and sense of self-worth. In canon, Roji wanted to go into Magic Law so he could protect his friends and others from spirits. He was constantly plagued with self-doubt because he had a very difficult time learning the ropes of spiritual magic and Magic Law, and continuously questioned himself when his lack of experience prevented him from doing what he set out to achieve. In this AU, Roji has never been involved with ghosts (and thus doesn't fear them as much), nor has he been thrown into constantly dangerous situations like the ones he faced in canon. While he's still on the meek side, he hasn't grappled with self-esteem issues quite like his canon counterpart did. When his scholarships didn't pan out, he didn't beat himself up over it- he simply did what he could to make up for it.
In that sense, Roji's aspirations are different in comparison to his canon counterpart's. He's still prone to helping people whenever he can, but it's not his entire driving force. His goals are simpler: get into college, get a degree, and maybe get into a cool job in science down the line. He's still big about cooking, and in this AU he serves others through the Recolle U cafeteria, so his skill with it has a bit of a bigger role now.
Roji is also less dependent on others than his canon counterpart tended to be. While he was blessed with incredible power, he was usually out of his element when it came to dealing with ghosts. He and Muhyo often worked as a unit, Muhyo doing most of the heavy lifting and Roji providing support. He relied on Muhyo and other seasoned practitioners a lot when he lacked the experience to properly deal with a situation, and it was one of his personal sore spots. As the series progressed, he was able to work with them more as a team. AU Roji has actually been living independently for several years, and while he of course has plenty of friends and co-workers that he works alongside, he's been able to sustain himself and do things on his own well enough.
